THE LEGACY CONCERTS
Honoring Robert De Cormier Vermont's professional vocal classical ensemble, Counterpoint, will showcase the legacy of their founder and artistic director, Robert De Cormier, in a series of three concerts on April 1 – 3: Fri., Apr. 1, 7:30 pm, St. Thomas Church, Hanover, NH; Sat., Apr. 2, 7:30 pm, The Unitarian Church of Montpelier; Sun., Apr. 3, 4 pm, St. Paul's Cathedral, Burlington. De Cormier has long been an activist for social justice, working in the 1950's with Harry Belafonte, and breaking through racial barriers to bring African American spirituals to white choirs and audiences. He has also brought to audiences the work of composers and musicians who died in the WWII concentration camps. These concerts will feature original compositions and arrangements from folk genres including the folk classic “Dueling Banjos” from the movie “Deliverance.” Tickets, at $20 ($15 seniors), will be sold at the door as long as they last. Communion service accompanied by U2 songs The Smoky Newfield Project will perform the music at this benefit event (benefiting Lutheran World Relief in support of ONE - The campaign to make poverty history). TRIBUTE TO JONATHAN MYRICK DANIELS
In 1965, a deputy sheriff shot and killed Episcopal seminarian and civil rights worker Jonathan Myrick Daniels in Hayneville, Alabama after he pushed Ruby Sales, an African American teen, out of the way. Jonathan's grandparents lived in Lyndonville, Vermont. This weekend the town is remembering him. Ruby Sales will be in Lyndonville and will speak at several events. She is a recent graduate of Episcopal Divinity School, the same seminary that Daniels attended. She is founder and co-director of “The SpiritHouse Project,” a national organization based in Columbus, Georgia that brings people together to work for justice using research, education, action, arts, and more. Sun., Apr. 3, 4:30 pm, St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, 642 Hill St., Lyndonville, will offer Evensong, followed by a reception for Ruby Sales. TENDING THE FIRE for Lay Folk
Laity are invited to attend this two-day seminar offered by The Rev. Barbara Lemmel at Faith United Methodist Church, 899 Dorset St., South Burlington. It will be on Fri., April 8 from from 6 – 9 pm and Sat., April 9 from 9 – 4. The seminar will help laity learn ways to reduce anxiety, regain perspective, and work for positive growth and change within the church and for their own personal and work lives. BePEACE FOUNDATION COURSE
The National Peace Academy will hold a four-day BePeace course in Charlotte from June 28 – July 1. ePeace is a practice of coherence through appreciation, and connection to universal needs through empathy and honesty. The course empowers participants to use the practice of BePeace in their lives and to grow as peacemakers. The lectures are followed by experiential exercises in small groups so every participant has an opportunity to practice and demonstrate BePeace skills and techniques. The course is helpful for everyone including students, teachers, and parents, equipping them with the skills to resolve conflicts in a manner that's mutually satisfying, and it provides life skills to make positive choices that enrich life. PEACEBUILDING & PEACELEARNING INTENSIVE
This one-week program is for people who wish to create change that is significant, meaningful, and sustainable in communities. It will be held at Champlain College, Burlington, July 17 – 23. 400TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE KING JAMES BIBLE
This year is the King James Bible's 400th anniversary.
