MARCUS BORG EVENTS
Dr. Marcus Borg, the well-known author
and scholar, will be visiting Vermont in October. He will
be presenting lectures at the Middlebury Congregational Church
on Friday, Oct. 19th and Saturday, Oct. 20th and will give
the sermon during their church service on Sunday, Oct. 21st.
For more information, or to register to attend on Friday
and/or Saturday, go to the website: www.midducc.org and
click on “Our Borg Weekend”
at the bottom of the homepage.
Dr. Borg will also give a lecture in Burlington
on Sunday, October 21st from 4 – 5:30 p.m. at the Champlain
College Gymnasium. This lecture is free, however, tickets
are required and seating is limited. Call 802-862-1898 or email: secretary@christchurchburlington.org to
request tickets. The title of his lecture is “The Split
Personality of Religion: Promoting Peace or Inciting Violence?” Dr. Borg
asserts that the role of religion in human history is pervasively
ambiguous as is evident in the relationship between religion,
conflict, and violence. While religions have often intensified
conflict and violence in God’s name, they have also
emphasized a different understanding of God and the values
of compassion, non-violence, and justice to counter conflict
and violence. Dr. Borg will give historical examples of these
contrasting ways and will apply them to American Christianity
today. Christ Church Presbyterian and Champlain College sponsor
the event.
